Tejo or Turmequé is an activity full of local flavor that will show you some of the most representative and funnier traditions of the city. Most Tejo venues are located in popular neighborhoods where things usually start with seeking your first pola (beer) at a local tienda, the meeting point after a hard labor Saturday for thousands of workers. A tienda, is a simple grocery store that also works as a pub with a few tables, a jukebox with popular hits, and of course, cold beers. Modern tejo is based on a game that was developed in Turmequé, Boyaca, Colombia more than 450 years ago, however, this activity has indigenous origins. Join Camilo Rodriguez, our Operations Manager at a game with his friends at one of the local tejo spots in Bogotá, fun, fun fun!
“This time I want to share some pictures and a video of my friends and I having fun playing “Tejo”. Tejo is the national sport, is an indigenous heritage of the native communities that inhabited the area where Bogotá was founded. This fun game consists of throwing a metallic disk at a clay board with small pockets of gunpowder laying in a metal ring. If the metal disk hits the gunpowder packet, then BOOM, the packet sparks and has a tiny explosion. You can have some beers while you’re playing just be careful when you throw the disk. This is one activity you have to do if you are in Colombia”
