A culture can be understood through its sounds. This is why the Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival, held annually in Cali in August, is essential for those wishing to learn more about this region of western Colombia. The festival is named in honor of an important musician born in 1914 on the island of Cascajal near Buenaventura and attracts local and international bands that play Pacific afro Colombian music.
The Pacific coast of Colombia maintains a rich African culture due to its ancestry, which can be seen in the music, dress and exhibitions at the festival. The festival has progressively grown in popularity and size since its beginning. It is an important celebration of folklore and culture of the Colombian Pacific Coast and a meeting of the most prominent composers and music groups native to the Pacific region.
Away from the main stage, a wonderful display of fish dishes is always available; shrimp empanadas, fish stew, fried plantains covered with shrimp in coconut sauce, fish-stuffed papa rellenas and more. Smaller bands play amongst the artisanal stalls, arts and crafts, afro fashion and everything related to the culture is available at this open event (no cost) that lasts one long weekend.
